May is not wasting any time getting to work. Dusty May has taken over as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program, and he’s got plenty of work to do. There are plenty of scholarships availability to distribute, and there is a world where there are no returning players from last year’s team. While that’s unlikely, May and the Wolverines are not wasting any time reaching out to players in the portal.
Connor Essegian
The first named with rumored mutual interest was Connor Essegian. The combo guard entered the transfer portal from Big Ten rival Wisconsin due to a lack of playing time his sophomore season. But as a true freshman, Essegian was sensational. The 6-foot-4 Fort Wayne native shot 35.9 percent from deep and averaged 11.7 points per game that year, earning him All-Big Ten Freshman first-team honors.

The future of Michigan athletics is on the upswing across the board. The boys are back to cover all things Michigan Wolverines and there are no off-seasons or slow periods for Michigan athletics. The basketball team has already found its Juwan Howard replacement in FAU’s Dusty May. Michigan hockey is back in the NCAA Tournament and is in the region of death. Michigan football is back in action for spring ball, so what are reasonable expectations for freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis? In a new series profiling Michigan freshmen, the boys discuss the immediate outlook for the young signal-caller.

May has his work cut out for him when it comes to roster construction. Now that the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program has a new head man in charge with Dusty May, the next step is to fill out his coaching staff and roster. The latter may prove to be more difficult than normal as Michigan’s roster has been more or less wiped clean following the departure of Juwan Howard. Beyond that, Howard’s tenure was Example A of how difficult it can be to utilize the transfer portal with Michigan’s rigorous academic standards not loosening for athletic transfers.
May has his work cut out for him to return Michigan basketball to prominence.
While not a huge proponent of the transfer portal during his tenure at Florida Atlantic, May dabbled into it occasionally and will likely be forced to do so in year one in Ann Arbor due to the lack of quality options currently on the roster. Let’s examine who he may be able to bring with him directly from Collapse

Washington is in the portal, but could still return to Michigan. We saw a flurry of Michigan players enter the portal after the firing of Juwan Howard, including freshman guard George Washington III.
Washington spoke briefly with Maize n Brew at Dusty May’s introductory press conference as the new head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, and Washington offered up some praise for May.
“He’s a great guy,” Washington said of May. “It’s very obvious talking to him that he’s a great guy, and his track record speaks for itself. He’s a great coach.”
Washington played sparingly last season for the Wolverines. Michigan’s lone true freshman played less than seven minutes per game and 144 minutes total, with a bulk of that coming in garbage time. He averaged 1.2 points per game and made 18.5 percent of his shots, 22.2 percent of his threes and 85.7 percent of his free throws.

The Cavaliers’ typical sixth-man has been forced into a starting role lately and has flourished. Sadly, the injury bug took its bite this week as two former Michigan Wolverines were forced to miss time. On the positive side of the ledger, Caris LeVert slid into the starting rotation and played some fantastic basketball.
Here’s how each of the former Wolverines performed in NBA action this week.
Franz Wagner, F, Orlando Magic
19.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.9 APG in 63 games
Despite Orlando being red-hot at the moment, Wagner had a relatively quiet week by his standards. On Tuesday against Charlotte, he scored just 11 points with three assists and no rebounds to speak of. On Thursday and Saturday against New Orleans and Sacramento respectively, Franz scored an identical 18 points with three rebounds in each contest. While not a bad week by any means, it did bring down his averages in the main statistical categories.

Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines seem to be doing really well in the recruitment of one of the top OL prospects in 2025. This past weekend marked the first decently-sized recruiting event for the Michigan Wolverines under head coach Sherrone Moore. With spring practices underway and recruits wanting to see the reigning national champions in action, these will be more commonplace in Ann Arbor over the next month.
In today’s Recruiting Roundup, we will dive into how things went this past weekend for one of the best overall players in the 2025 class, as well as other general updates.
Five-star OL dishes on weekend trip to U-M
Moore is swinging for the fences in the 2025 class along the offensive line with a few highly touted players, with none of them ranked higher than five-star Andrew Babalola. The 6-foot-6, 280-pounder hails from Moore’s home state of Kansas seems to have developed a strong connection with the new Michigan head coach.

Michigan’s RB1 may be bringing thunder and lightning next season. Donovan Edwards will be Michigan’s lead running back in 2024, and he’s doing things to ensure he has the force necessary to be a three-down back.
“I’m at 214 right now, at the end of the season I was about 200,” Edwards told the media on Monday. “Gaining 14 more pounds, being consistent in my nutrition, being consistent in the weight room has helped me a lot.”
While Edwards has put on a good amount of weight thus far this offseason, he isn’t sacrificing his game-changing acceleration.
“I feel great. I feel like my cuts are looking better. I’m playing better. The speed is back. The speed is where it needs to be,” Edwards explained. “And I put on 14 more pounds. There aren’t a lot of changes for returning players, but we’re seeing some encouraging things from freshmen on campus already. We knew well ahead of spring practice Michigan would lose a lot of talent to the NFL after the 2023 season. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum and a long list of other players won’t be wearing the winged helmet next season.
But there is no shortage of talent in Ann Arbor. After one week of spring practice, here’s a look at some of the changes to the roster — which was just released over the weekend — for some of those returning players on players on offense.
Quarterbacks
-Freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis (#2) put on some weight between his commitment and spring ball. According to the roster, Davis weighs 203 pounds. That’s up from the 190 he was listed at after he signed.

Michigan has struggled with consistency this season, but has the ceiling necessary to make it a contender for the National Championship. The Michigan Wolverines are back in the NCAA Tournament and are pursuing their third straight Frozen Four appearance. The only thing standing between them and this reality — and hopefully more — is the hardest path of any of the 16 teams in the tournament.
First up, Michigan has to face former teammate Keaton Pehrson and North Dakota in the opening round before potentially facing the Western Michigan/Michigan State winner. If the Wolverines can win this region of death, they will likely face either defending national champion Quinnipiac or the top overall seed, Boston College, in the Frozen Four.
If Michigan makes it to its first national title game since 2011, it could be a 2022 rematch against Denver in a matchup that would once again personify the Spider-Man meme. The path to Michigan’s first Collapse

The new lead running back talks about how he got his groove back. The Michigan Wolverines will be getting a key piece of their offense back in 2024 in running back Donovan Edwards, who finally gets an opportunity to lead the backfield after splitting carries with Blake Corum over the last couple years.
For Edwards, replacing Corum will not be easy. The Marshall, Virginia native was a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher in 2022 (1,463 yards) and 2023 (1,245). He nearly posted another 1,000-yard rushing season in 2021 (952), as Michigan led the NCAA in rushing touchdowns that season with 39. With Corum’s help, the Wolverines would replicate that same feat in 2023 with 40 rushing touchdowns, and also finished second in 2022 with 41.
Simply put, Corum spent the last three seasons as the offensive identity of a program that won the Big Ten three times and a National Championship. So where does that leave Edwards in 2024?
Last season, Edwards had 119 Collapse

Sherrone Moore continues to pad his recruiting department. Michigan is hiring former player Jack Dunaway and Georgia’s John Collins as assistant directors of recruiting within the football program. This is according to On3 and 247Sports, respectively.
Collins previously held a personnel and recruiting analyst position with the Bulldogs the last two years. Before his time with UGA, he served as a scouting and recruiting assistant for Temple for five months before being scooped up by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a training camp player personnel intern.
Dunaway’s name is a little bit more familiar. The former Michigan linebacker suited up for the Wolverines from 2016-18 and was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Dunaway was also named MLive’s Detroit Player of the Year on Defense as a senior.

Michigan’s former head coach is still going to bat for his quarterback. One of the biggest dates of the offseason for Michigan’s draft prospects came last Friday, as several draft hopefuls took to the field in Ann Arbor for Michigan’s annual pro day. The pro day provided players with another chance to impress NFL scouts and executives ahead of next month’s draft.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been generating plenty of buzz since the NFL Combine in Indianapolis a few weeks ago. Since then, McCarthy has climbed even further up draft boards, cementing himself as one of the four best quarterbacks in the draft and a likely top-10 pick. Unsurprisingly, McCarthy impressed at his pro day as well, showcasing the arm talent we’ve previously seen him demonstrate in games.

Michigan is off to a solid start in conference play after winning two on the road. Following a Tuesday loss against Eastern Michigan, the Michigan baseball team looked to overcome some early season struggles heading into conference play. The Wolverines went on the road this weekend for their first series against a Big Ten opponent, facing off against Penn State for three games.
On Friday night, freshman Dylan Vigue took the ball and pitched two scoreless innings to open the game, however Penn State would eventually get to him, scoring two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to go up 3-0.
Michigan would rally though in the sixth inning, loading up the bases and cashing in on back-to-back walks and a hit-by-pitch. These Penn State pitching miscues allowed Michigan to tie the game at 3-3. Penn State’s bullpen would hold on after that though to limit the damage.
